ABOUT

Pyjama Drama childrens drama franchise UK

โ€œSarah and Rachel have been really supportive throughout training and are professional, kind and warm people who I instantly clicked with. The other franchisees are really supportive too.โ€

Lydia, Central Worcestershire Franchisee

Pyjama Drama was established in 2009 and is is recognised as a leading expert in early years imaginative play, with franchisees across the UK and abroad. They are not a stage school, rather everything they do develops children’s life skills. Franchisees can offer classes, performances and parties in nurseries, schools, and public sessions. They also have the opportunity to benefit from an additional income stream by delivering award-winning training to early years practitioners.

A comprehensive training package (including a mix of pre-recorded, remote and in-person) means franchisees launch their businesses confident, skilled, and with a whole team behind them. Enquire today if youโ€™re passionate about drama and play, and are looking for a flexible career!

Franchisee Case Study

Pyjama Drama childrens drama and dramatic play franchise franchisee case study with Leanne

Name: LEANNE

Territory: MID ESSEX

Start Date: DECEMBER 2018

As a mother of two young children, Leanne was craving a flexible new career that would fit around family life. She was specifically looking for a drama franchise and found her perfect match with Pyjama Drama. Here she shares her journey to buying a franchise and the steps she took to ensure it was the right decision for her and her family.

My final decision was all down to my dad to be honest. He knew how much I wanted to go ahead, but understandably was hesitant because of the financial outlay, and the fact that he knew nothing about the business. So we arranged a visit. My dad and I drove five and half hours to Welshpool to meet with Sarah and Rachel. He came armed with many questions, while I was being swept away with the excitement of it all.

The day, of course, went well โ€“ questions were answered, and I met another franchisee whom I was able to watch deliver a session. By the end of the day mine (and my dadโ€™s) decision was made โ€“ to go for it!

I wanted a drama franchise, but I didnโ€™t want something that was too structured, or trying to create performers. I was looking for something that was child-led and creative. The fact that there were no costumes, props, or big pieces of equipment I would have to store and invest in, was a huge positive as well. I also wanted something unique to offer settings and families โ€“ which Pyjama Drama certainly is.

I was really lucky because, after meeting Sarah and Rachel, my dad agreed to loan me the initial franchise fee. I know other franchisees have financed the franchise in a variety of ways โ€“ via a loan, personal savings, inheritance, or redundancy pay.

Iโ€™ll be honest, reading the contract was very wordy and hard to understand! But my good old dad read through it all, asked the relevant questions to Sarah and Rachel, and was comfortable for me to sign it. Iโ€™d strongly recommend finding someone to go through it with you, so you know what youโ€™re signing, what your responsibilities are, and of course what your franchisorโ€™s responsibilities are too.

If you are thinking of taking on a franchise, the biggest and most important piece of advice I can give, is to do your homework. Not only of the company itself, but also what is currently offered in your area. Itโ€™s always better to choose something that differs to what is already on offer locally โ€“ and thereโ€™s nothing quite like Pyjama Drama!

There is a huge amount of work involved in starting your own company from scratch, so if you find a franchise that appeals to you (a business model thatโ€™s already been developed, and tried-and-tested), Iโ€™d strongly recommend you go for it. With a franchise you absolutely do still have to work hard, but you donโ€™t have to worry about planning each session, instead you can use that time to learn it and deliver it really well. And the longer youโ€™re in the business, the faster you get at learning the plans too so itโ€™s a win-win.

What I really like is the flexibility it gives me. I can work around my family commitments, and choose hours that suit me. The training and ongoing support is great, it prepares you as much as it can before you head out on your own. Once you are out there in settings or delivering public classes, thereโ€™s always help on hand from fellow franchisees or from Sarah and Rachel should you need it. I would absolutely recommend buying a franchise, itโ€™s the best decision I ever made!

Franchisor Interview

Pyjama Drama childrens drama and dramatic play franchise franchisor interview with Sarah Owen

Name: SARAH OWEN

Role: FRANCHISOR

We asked Sarah (pictured on the right) some key questions about the drama franchise that she runs with her sister Rachel. Here she shares how Pyjama Drama started from offering one session at her son’s playgroup to now having built up to an award-winning international brand. Find out what makes an ideal franchisee and the sort of training and support every new franchisee can expect to recieve.

Since 2009, we grew to having 30+ franchisees around the UK pre-2020, and have been lucky enough to also franchise abroad. Our numbers are not yet back up to pre-pandemic levels, but our franchisees are all doing very well financially, and are happy in terms of their income and work-life balance โ€“ so we know it is just a matter of time until we grow back to this level. As well as our UK franchisees, we currently also franchise in Malaysia, China and India, and in the recent past, in Australia.

Over the past five years, we have developed the training side of the business, which means the team at Head Office deliver award-winning CPD to teachers and early years practitioners โ€“ teaching them how to use imaginative play in their practice to develop life skills and meet curriculum objectives. This is something we are extremely proud of, not least because it gives our franchisees the opportunity to deliver training in their territories โ€“ boosting their income, and their status as drama experts!

First and foremost, we look for people who are passionate about the power of drama, play, and make-believe; people who recognise that drama is the most powerful tool we have at our disposal to boost childrenโ€™s life skills, to help children develop a love of learning, and to help nurture happy, confident, engaged members of society.

We look for friendly, hard-working, professional people who are enthusiastic team players. We donโ€™t need franchisees to have formal drama experience, or to have been a teacher โ€“ if they can be larger-than-life, not take themselves too seriously, and enjoy being silly with children โ€“ weโ€™d love them to enquire. There is a fair amount of singing in our sessions, but they donโ€™t need to be a professional singer either โ€“ so long as they can carry a tune and enjoy singing, the children donโ€™t mind!

The Pyjama Drama franchise is competitively priced and, in line with industry recommendations, is priced such that franchisees should get a return on their investment within 12-18 months. For franchisees who are working flexibly full-time, they should expect to get a return on investment easily within a year. We do ask for the initial franchise fee to be paid in full before training begins, but we can hold territories for a time should this be necessary, and for the right individual.

Because our franchise model is so flexible, turnover and profit can vary, and so weโ€™d encourage anyone considering a career with us to book an informal chat so we can discuss their specific earning potential based on the number of hours they want to work, and the particular products they want to deliver.

Very! We have franchisees who work full-time flexibly and others who work part-time hours, some who work lots in the school holidays, and others who choose to only offer a handful of sessions out of term-time. We have franchisees who run their business part-timeย alongside another job when they first start, some who want to build their business slowly whilst their children are young, and others who want to throw themselves in from the very start. We have franchisees whose work consists mainly of nursery sessions, others who do more public classes, franchisees who love delivering performances and parties, and others who donโ€™t! The important thing is that we help franchisees to build a business that works for them, their family, and their ambitions.

We are very proud of both our training and the ongoing support we offer. Training consists of a mixture of remote training (watching pre-recorded lessons and meeting with members of the Head Office team online), and two days of in-person training in the birthplace of Pyjama Drama โ€“ Welshpool, Mid Wales.

The remote training has been designed to be completed flexibly, and at a pace that works for the individual. Generally, you can expect to put aside around six hours a week, for six weeks, but of course some franchisees want to take longer, and others complete it faster.

The training itself includes not only the practical side of running the franchise (how to use our drama techniques and deliver the sessions) but also every other element of running a business including marketing, financial planning and record-keeping, legalities, business planning, safeguarding, and administration. And the most important thing to remember is that no-one is expected to remember it all straight away! Thereโ€™s a lot to learn, and weโ€™re there every step of the way to support our franchisees โ€“ whether theyโ€™ve been with us for 10 days, or 10 years!

New franchisees are supported not only by the team at Head Office, but also our wonderful network of franchisees who are the most lovely bunch of people youโ€™ll ever meet! Franchisees share good practice, ask questions and cheer each other on via a closed Facebook group, and I am only ever a phone call away. We have termly online โ€˜inspireโ€™ meetings with the whole network, bi-annual support/review meetings online with a director, and an annual seminar in Welshpool each year where we get together for refresher training, business planning, and socialising!
