Franchisee Case Study

MagiKats children's tutoring franchise opportunity franchisee case study

Name: SALLY

Territory: LYTHAM

Start Date: 2021

Meet Sally who joined the MagiKats franchise after a long-standing career as a secondary school Maths teacher. Here she shares her journey to franchising and how she made the transition from the classroom to being a franchisee. She also gives her top tips for anyone thinking of buying a franchise.

MagiKats stood out because of the long history of the franchise and the fact that all materials are produced for me in a structured programme to teach. Their values, depth of expertise, established network and the freedom to be my own boss really resonated with me.

The ethos behind MagiKats reflects my own values and the tuition programme really does help to make learning fun. I’m five years in now and the response from my local community and the parents of the students I tutor has been really positive throughout. I love teaching and it’s incredibly rewarding to see children develop during our time with us. It’s exactly what I was looking to achieve when setting up my MagiKats Centre.

I used my own funds for the business but there are finance options available for those who do not have the capital required. You’ll need a small amount of working capital too in the early stages.

As running costs are kept low, you only need a handful of students to break even and so it doesn’t take long to start earning from your business.

The franchise agreement is a legal document so it’s important to get advice before signing to ensure you know your obligations as a franchisee. Also, take the time to ask any questions of the Franchisor if you feel anything is unclear.

With most franchises, there’s usually an initial fee required and then monthly ongoing fees, so make sure you understand what these are and are comfortable with this.

It’s a business that you can run alongside your usual career so for people who may be nervous about taking the leap, it’s a great way to transition into building your own business. Leveraging the MagiKats brand in my local area was a little daunting at first but there’s lots of marketing materials available to help. It’s also reassuring to know I can draw on the wealth of experience within the wider network, from the head office team to fellow franchisees. That shared knowledge creates a real sense of community and guidance when it’s needed.

Franchisor Interview

MagiKats children's tutoring franchise opportunity franchisor interview

Name: SARAH MARSH

Role: FRANCHISOR

We asked Sarah all about the award-winning tutoring franchise that her parents launched over twenty-years ago. This family business has continued to go from strength to strength as a lucrative opportunity for those with a passion for education. Sarah tells us what makes an ideal franchisee and explains the sort of support every new franchisee receives.

Today the MagiKats programme is a comprehensive system, providing materials that help students up to the age of 16 in maths and English. Our small group tuition workshops are run across the country by our franchise network, supporting thousands of students each year. Last year we introduced an online learning platform to help reach children who cannot access our in-person workshops, and we’ve also recently rolled out this digital learning system to independent tutors via our sister brand, Study Central.

There is no typical franchisee as people can join us from all different backgrounds, however there are certain types of personality that will suit being a franchisee more than others. We are particularly interested in hearing from qualified teachers, or those who have worked in an education setting previously, as they’ll be well versed on what’s required when working with children.

That said, we offer full training and support, so you do not have to come from an education background. You’ll typically be well educated, a natural communicator that’s organised and motivated, and most importantly, have a passion for helping children to learn.

The franchise package costs £9,500 including VAT and includes £1000 worth of start up materials, full training and support, as well as access to our ‘KATS’ system, rights to use our trade mark and branding, website and marketing collateral, plus lots more. Qualified teachers receive 20% off their initial franchise fee (a saving of almost £2000) as we recognise the considerable value they add to our network.

We don’t charge an ongoing percentage on turnover like many other franchises, instead we charge two types of affordable fixed fees each month – a support fee and a materials fee. This enables franchisees to have flexibility on the rates they charge parents and reduces the worry on how this impacts your costs.

In terms of other ongoing costs, one of the key advantages is that many of the expenses grow in line with student numbers, keeping overheads low and helping franchisees reach break even with just a handful of students, reducing financial risk in the early stages.

If you do not want to invest your savings into the franchise, funding can usually be sought through an unsecured loan via the ‘start up loans scheme’ run by the UK Government.

The MagiKats Tutoring business model is very flexible as our centres run out of school hours and/or at weekends so you can choose to run your business part time if you wish. Most centres operate just two days a week, yet still grow into strong, profitable businesses. This makes it a particularly attractive business model for people transitioning from school teaching, those wanting a more flexible work-life balance or anyone wanting to build up their own business while still working.

Our initial training includes everything you need to know about our programmes to get started to deliver MagiKats workshops as well as business preparation training, marketing assistance, on-site support visits, advice on recruiting staff…the list goes on! We also hold regular webinars on upcoming changes to our programme or systems, encourage ongoing professional development and have a forum where franchisees can collaborate on ideas and ask for advice from HQ or around the network.
