Franchisee Case Study

Cricket tots the kids sports franchise opportunity UK franchisee Tom

Name: TOM

Territory: SURREY

Start Date: APRIL 2024

Meet Tom who came across Cricket tots when researching sports clubs for his young son to attend. The brand immediately captured his attention as an opportunity for himself and a chance to bring cricket to children in his local area! Here he offers his top tips, insights and advice for anyone thinking of buying a sports franchise.

Once I saw how well-run and professional the company was - and how much support they provide to help you get started - it felt like the right decision to go ahead. Visiting other franchise owners and hearing about their positive experiences also gave me confidence. There are plenty of successful franchise businesses offering kids’ activities around various sports, so I felt reassured there was a strong market for cricket too.

I don’t think you can ever be 100% certain before you start, but the team gave me a lot of confidence. They shared useful data, financial models, a solid business plan, and case studies from successful franchisees. Still, I suppose the real confirmation came once we launched - and the numbers were strong!

I’d built up savings from another business, so was able to use those.

Make sure you read the legal documents carefully, and don’t hesitate to contact a lawyer if you need help understanding any of the details. If you have any concerns, speak with the franchisor before signing anything.

Do your research, review the financial models before moving forward, and make sure it’s a good fit for you and your lifestyle. You’ll also need a bit of patience in the beginning - like any new venture, it can take time to build momentum. The big advantage of a franchise, compared to starting a business from scratch, is the level of support you receive. Everyone is invested in your success, which makes a real difference.

Franchisor Interview

Cricket tots cricket franchise franchsior interview with Lucy

Name: LUCY FITZGERALD

Role: FRANCHISOR

We asked Lucy all about her award-winning cricket franchise. Find out how the idea for the business came about and how it has grown since being founded in 2016. Lucy shares what makes an ideal franchisee for Cricket tots, information about the initial franchise fee and the level of support every new franchisee gets upon joining the team.

From humble beginnings of just 3 classes on a Saturday morning, we quickly grew to running classes for about 100 children each week. Given such a positive and reassuring response, we could see that there was a clear demand for cricket classes for toddlers and preschoolers – and with a shared history of franchising in the children’s activities sector, it was the perfect next step for us!

As of June 2025, we have 9 franchisees in the UK and 1 in Barbados, with more in the pipeline for a launch later this year.

Alongside partnering with world-renowned cricket brand, Gray-Nicolls, we’re fully accredited members of the CAA (Children’s Activities Association), full members of the QFA (Quality Franchise Association), and in 2024 were crowned Family Business of the Year in the Club Hub awards.

The right person is key to running a successful Cricket tots franchise, but we’re not looking for brilliantly technical cricket coaches – we’re looking for people who love cricket, and who also share Steve’s natural rapport with children (because that’s something that can’t be taught – you either have it, or you don’t).

Being a team player is important, as is a ‘can-do’ attitude. And because you’ll be dealing with kids, you’ll need a healthy dollop of patience and a good sense of humour!

As for the business skills – obviously it helps if you have them, but it’s not a problem if you don’t because we’ll give you all the training you need.

Our initial franchise fee is £5,000, which gives you a clearly defined exclusive territory and includes everything you need to get your business off to a flying start, and payment plans are available.

There’s also an ongoing management fee of 8% each month, plus a marketing fee of 2% that goes towards any marketing initiatives, development of new collateral, etc. that the whole network can benefit from.

As with any business, how much you can earn largely depends on how many sessions you’re able to commit to each week, and how you decide to shape and grow your business, but our franchise prospectus includes a real-life example from one of our current franchisees.

As a Cricket tots franchisee you’ll have the flexibility to work around your other work or family commitments. We’ve several income streams, so you can shape your business in a way that suits you; and you can also employ coaches to help you run the sessions and expand into new areas.

We’ll give you comprehensive initial training and launch support in all areas of your business, along with follow-up field visits and practical evaluation from Head Office to ensure you’re comfortable and happy with how your classes are progressing.

The support doesn’t stop once you’re up and running – it’s ongoing, whenever you need it – and you’ll also have a dedicated Cricket tots mentor to help you with any financial queries, class ideas, or marketing requests. They’ll also help you set your goals, review your progress and strategies, and offer general support.

And if you’re not already a qualified cricket coach, we’ll sort that out for you as part of the onboarding process!
