Little Wickets UK children's cricket franchise opportunity meet franchisee Mark

Name: MARK JONES

Territory: BERKSHIRE

Start Date: APRIL 2025

Meet Mark who found his way to Little Wickets when looking for cricket sessions for his young son to attend. Here he explains what drew him to the brand and how it felt like too good an opportunity to pass up. He also shares his top tips for anyone thinking of buying a franchise.

I put together a fairly detailed business plan and discussed extensively with my family and friends - mostly my wife who would no doubt be affected by the decision. In the end it was a matter of weighing up the pros and cons and I think the clincher was the realisation that the risk of regret from not going for it would have weighed too heavily vs the alternative! It helped that I was always confident that I could make the finances work if I put in the work.

The opportunity felt right from the moment I discovered it - it was in an industry which is a big passion for me (sports and specifically cricket) and I knew I would enjoy the prospect of working with children, having raised my own! It also helped that I got on really well with Chloe (the founder of the original business) and I could see myself working well with her. She was super helpful, engaged and responsive from the first time we spoke and her passion for Little Wickets was contagious! Our relationship since launching has continued on a strong footing.

I am lucky enough to be a Partner in my family's farming business and was able to extract some capital from there to invest into the franchise.

Chloe's advice was always to make sure I get formal legal advice at appropriate stages of the journey - this included when signing the initial Intent to Proceed agreement and then the formal franchise contract. So I did that and would recommend others do the same - it didn't cost too much and is definitely worthwhile. My own contract management experience in the corporate world also helped! Use your friends and family network to get advice from people you/they know and trust.

Probably two main things. Firstly, make sure you think you can work with the main business and they will offer the right support and guidance when you are starting out (and beyond). Secondly, that you've properly considered what level of commitment it will need. I manage my franchise alongside a fairly stressful full time job and have a young family... I can't claim it's always easy!
